Literacy is a source of empowerment and is fundamental to the development of our intellectual growth. Here at Portland High we know that the future of our world depends on our ability to build and improve the communication skills of our students. Literacy skills are taught within every content area and are a focus of staff development and training. The diverse skill sets and educational experiences that our students enter high school with are a challenge and we manage those through differentiation, educational supports, such as literacy labs, and literacy development classes, such as READ 180. Sally Reagan is the Literacy Specialist at PHS and acts as a resource for both students and staff. Planning and teaching classes, conferencing with faculty, writing and carrying out grants, co-teaching, creating literacy-based projects, assessing needs of particular students, and providing new and useful research for staff are all integral responsibilities of this position.
